Sick Day Routine

Evening everyone! Apologies for my mini absence the last few days - Izzy was off school with a sore tummy on Thursday and that one day seems to have thrown my whole routine off!

I thought it would be fun/interesting/something to write about if I shared our routine when Izzy was off school on Thursday - it gave Izzy and I something to talk about taking lots of photos anyway!

Our day actually started off really late on Thursday. My alarm usually goes off at 7.30am, but I must have cancelled it without properly waking up. Normally not a problem as Izzy usually comes in to see me as soon as Liam leaves for work at 7am (having already been playing in her room for a while). On Thursday however, I woke up naturally and panicked when I saw that it was already 8am! When I went into Izzy's room she was fast asleep, and when she did wake up she claimed that she'd been up in the night with a sore tummy. Bless her, she didn't seem herself so I decided not to send her in to school. Instead, I got her cuddled up on the sofa...

and then set about making coffee - I had a feeling it was going to be a long day! Recently I've been adding some ground cinnamon in with my ground coffee. I saw the idea on several blogs and it works really well - a hint of cinnamon without having to buy special coffee!

Next up was breakfast. I'd been planning to have scrambled eggs and luckily Izzy agreed that that was a good "sick day breakfast". I had mine with half an avocado, and of course coffee. Izzy had hers on toast, with the crusts cut off as a special treat!

Izzy ate all her breakfast up really quickly, and so I thought maybe the only thing "wrong" with her was tiredness. But actually she deteriorated after this and didn't really eat much for the rest of the day. I kept trying though, and was able to keep her liquids up with the help of "magic straws" - milk turned chocolatey!

Izzy's attempt at a thumbs up. I gave up trying to get an open-eyed shot!
The morning involved lots of cuddles on the sofa and TV watching. Sounds nice but it was near impossible for me to get anything done as aside from giving Izzy lots of cuddles, I also had to spend most of my time stopping Toby giving Izzy too vigourous cuddles! He didn't understand why she was lying on the sofa but not wanting him near him!!

The morning passed quite quickly though and before we knew it, it was lunchtime. Izzy wanted her packed lunch as it was cheese muffin day, so I made her up a red/pink face plate...

This was when her appetite disappeared - she only managed a couple of bites of muffin, a few spoons of yoghurt, a couple of grapes and half her penguin!! I had her second cheese muffin and then a bit later had my own lunch - leftover ratatouille, roasted onion squash and Sabra houmous...

Over lunchtime, Toby had his nap. So as well as more TV watching, Izzy and I read her school books. The library book (for me to read) that Izzy had chosen was all about huge spiders and bugs...shudder.

Her book was a much less nightmare-inducing Biff Chip Kipper book...

In the afternoon Izzy had a little nap, and the rest of the day went by in a bit of a blur. It seems I got quite bored as I took quite a few iPhone photos of all our cuddles!

Awww.

By the time Liam came home I was too tired to cook, so the day ended with pizza. Peppers, courgettes, olives (which I avoided, yuck) etc x2...

The day actually went by better than I'd been expecting. I would've liked to have had a little bit of fresh air - Izzy wasn't keen on that idea so we literally didn't leave the house from Wednesday afternoon until Friday morning - but apart from that it was a pretty relaxed day. Although I was still very pleased to be woken up on Friday morning by Izzy bouncing about saying "I'm better Mummy!!". Bless her, I don't really know what was up with her on Thursday - she definitely wasn't right, but seems to have now made a full recovery so that's good. Only 4 days of school next week before half term anyway, so lots of time to rest then!

What do you do when you have days off because you are ill? Sofa day or a bit of pottering about? I (luckily) rarely used to get ill before I had children, but when I did I would find that a bit of fresh air made me feel better. If Izzy had been off school for longer I would've probably at least made us go out in the garden (if only to stop me & Toby from getting cabin fever - he brought his shoes to me on Thursday wanting to go outside!!) but as it was only one day I figured a sofa day wouldn't do her any harm! It was odd that she was off her food though - so unlike her - but like I say, she seems to be back to normal now so it was just one of those things I guess - young children seem to pick up bugs all the time!

  1. I generally like a good secession on the couch when I'm feeling ill, I'll also spend a large portion of the day with the boys on the couch if they are sick too - being close seems to help (me if anything ;-)). I do find I need a blast of fresh air by the afternoon though.

  3. Love that lunch plate so much- so so cute! And everyone loves a good ORT book! I taught reception for 3 years in a row and by the end of that I never wanted to read "at the beach" etc again. :)
If I am ill then I do tend to lay about on the sofa all day- I know I am ill as normally that would drive me mad, stir crazy etc. Glad Izzy is better now.
